This blog is about 3 stories.

1. The start-up year for a very different sort of Graduate School of Education. It's a tiny subset of...
2. ...The much larger, national effort to transform teaching and teachers. That is a big subset of...
3. ...A multi-kajillion-dollar effort to improve the ludicrous odds (7% or so) of a poor kid ever getting a college diploma.

Character Compass

If you teach or lead in a No Excuses school, you’ll enjoy Scott Seider’s new book. Scott examines the character-building curriculum at 3 excellent Boston charters — RoxPrep, BostonPrep, and Academy of the Pacific Rim. Each school has a different approach.

Podcast Guru Matt Weber just interviewed Scott about the book. So if you’re like my colleague Randall and consume a lot of podcasts, go here. If not, just go buy the book. It’s an easy read.

I’m supposed to write a review next month, to compare/contrast Scott’s book with Paul Tough’s, for Commonwealth Magazine. So any thoughts welcome.

I like this stuff. The podcast was a nice summary.
It seems important. Maybe harder to trust ‘test results’ on integrity or perseverance, but they might be higher return than the next 5% on math.
